What's up with the new girl??

So, since my name has been on the contributor list for probably at least a month now, I figured I should make my maiden post and at least let everyone know who the new kid is!

Here at Waiting for Ships, I decided to go by "The FlyingFish." I didn't really have a good reason for doing that, other than wanting to be more creative than just using my actual name... which is Becca. I guess using this name also keeps me a little less confused when I hop onto the blogger dashboard since my other blog is actually called The FlyingFish. Holy cow... I'm not creative at all!!!

I guess I can introduce myself using the name, though, since it does really explain a lot about me. I join Waiting for Ships as the active duty girl, married to the active duty guy. The "flying" part of the name is a reference to my husband... he is a CG pilot, with just about 6 years of operational flying time now. The "fish" part is for me... I do fisheries enforcement training for the CG, and currently have my dream job as the boss at one of our fisheries training centers. I've spent almost my entire career focusing on the fisheries mission, with a few brief turns at counter-drug and migrant operations on a Big White One.

I'm one of those weird people who actually liked doing fisheries boardings off the New England coast in December. Though, I'd have to admit that one of my most miserable days was standing on the work deck of a dragger, in December, freezing my butt off and smelling like fish - when it started to snow. Ah, those were the days!!! Now the only hazards I face at work are papercuts and eye strain from all the time in front of the computer! It may not be exciting, but it's what I really love to do, so I can't complain at all. Besides, I get to live vicariously through the hubs, but without crazy duty schedules and deployments!

I just recently hit 9 years of post-Academy (insert groan here... she's Academy!??!) active duty time, with 4 of it on ships, 3 at a District office, a year at grad school, and now a year at my current unit. Wow... I just realized that I've spent 13 years of my life in the CG.... holy cow! 13! Already?? I digress....

My only kid so far is the four-legged, furry kind, thanks to the crazy Coast Guard lifestyle, and the fact that, every time it's transfer time, I live with a knot in my stomach for 6 months, worried that I won't get to live with the hubs - again. After spending three years apart thanks to orders, we're hoping to never have to do that again, and, so far, we've decided not to try to play that game with a kid involved. So, one day, maybe there will be a FlyingFish fry... but, for now, I talk a lot about the hypothetical-children-I'll-have-one-day, and I spoil my dog like it's going out of style!

Since it appears that I'm getting long-winded, I think I'll keep it at that! I'm excited about being a part of Waiting for Ships... I just need to figure out what I want to talk about!!! Hopefully it won't take me another month to come up with something!
