Home, Sweet, Home: Er, Somewhat

After traveling 4700 miles to our new home in Alaska, I learned the art of patience. As predicted, it really did take six weeks for our goods to arrive. And when they did, the chaos of my dearest husband finding all of his belongings was a treat to watch-- as he furiously unwrapped the obscene amount of paper our movers placed around plastic items. But I digress.

You see, my husband was getting ready to get underway and needed some of his precious belongings to make the patrol more bearable. 36 hours after the movers left us with our boxes, my husband left me with those boxes: to make a home, by myself. Not one to let my heavy heart to ground me, I unpacked and put togther a 1500 square foot home in three days. Yes, three days: pictures hung, wine glasses polished, books organized, CDs queued up for guests, save the garage. I detest the garage. Our new home lacked the luscious, lavish, large, deep closets we had in our DC apt; therefore, I had to take a whole day to stack our tubs of clothes, our unopened boxes of items that would not fit, and our camping gear. Creativity aside, I got the two cars to fit...er, somewhat.

And I guess that has been the theme of this PCS: "er, somewhat..."

Do you like your new home? er, somewhat...
Do you miss your husband? er, somewhat...
Do you like your new boss? er, somewhat...
How exciting is it to live in Alaska? er, somewhat...

After spending 5 glorious weeks traveling the country with him, curling up next to him in our small tent each evening at dusk, singing along to sappy country music, and smiling with him as he experienced "west of the Mississippi" for the first time in his life, I am alone for the next three and a half months. Yeah, I may have a perfectly appointed house, the cutest new puppy, and lots of new friends, but it is, er, somewhat not quite home sweet home without the big guy next to me.

Sing it sister. We all know that song.

I tip my hat to you though. You've done so much since you PCSd. I don't know where you find the energy.

You have not stopped since you got to Kodiak. You have kept yourself incredibly busy, which certainly helps the time pass by. Hopefully you will begin to enjoy Kodiak and all it has to offer more soon. Stinks that there wasn't really a summer to speak of to help you realize it's full potential.
