We live the Geo-bachelor lifestyle. The children and I live at least an hour away from the nearest Coast Guard base. There aren't even recruiters in my metro area.
I was pushing my littlest in the shopping cart at a chain craft supply store this morning. As my little guy kept wiggling to the side to look past me, I finally caught a passing glimpse at the man in a blue uniform. In the past, my kids have confused police uniforms with Coast Guard uniforms so I didn't even think twice about it. Then as I turned down the next aisle, I came face to face with the man, confirming that he was indeed wearing a Coast Guard uniform.
We exchanged pleasantries, after my youngest informed the man, "hey mister, that's Daddy's shirt" in an accusatory way that only a 3 year old can get away with. The man chuckled and guessed that I belong to the minivan with the Alaska plates that he parked beside. We had a nice brief conversation and parted in our different directions.
I have to say that sometimes it's very lonely being a military family in the very progressive liberal area we live in. However, this weekend, I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing many people who have served our country be out and about in uniforms on their ways to various Memorial Day activities.

That is really cool :) How fun!
How sweet!
Adorable! I like making that Coastie connection, too. We are stationed in an area that is heavily Navy and take every opportunity to wave the flag. :)
